Training for Scouts Interested in Being Den Chiefs

If your Scout is interested in becoming a Den Chief, the Spirit of Adventure Council is running a Den Chief Training event on Sunday 23 April.

What is a Den Chief?

A Den Chief is a qualified and trained Boy Scout or Venturer who assists and supports a Cub Scout Den Leader by helping the Cub Scouts, and being a role model for them.

Who Can Be a Den Chief?

Any Scout who meets the following requirements can be a Den Chief:

  • Has been a Scout for at least a year
  • Has achieved the rank of First Class or above
  • Has completed Den Chief Training

Why Be a Den Chief?

Being a Den Chief is great hands-on leadership training for Scouts. Providing Pack 49 with Den Chiefs is one of the ways the Troop 49 can help support the Pack, and help them to run a great Scout program. Strong and well-run Cub Scout Packs lead to strong and well-run Boy Scout Troops, so by helping Pack 49 today, we help assure Troop 49’s future success.

Where is It, When is It, and How Do We Sign Up?

The training will be held on Sunday 23 April from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at 1 Worthen Street in Chelmsford, MA.

Scouts can register for the training online here. Registration is now open, but the last day Scouts can register will be 19 April. The training cost is $5 per Scout. The training is free for any adult leader who would like to attend, although they should still register.

If you have any questions about the training event, you can send email to ericppatel@aol.com

Take Your Summer Camp Swim Test in Advance…

All Scouts spending time at Summer Camp at Wah-Tut-Ca are required to take the BSA Swim Test. This test allows the Camp Staff to gauge the Scouts’ swimming skills and take care of them appropriately during any activities at the waterfront. Normally, this test is administered Sunday afternoon.

Our Council is offering two opportunities for Scouts to take the BSA Swim Test in advance of this Summer, freeing up time at camp and hopefully making things run more smoothly. Scouts are not required to test in advance — the Swim Test will still be offered at camp — but advance testing is being offered for Scouts’ convenience.

The two advance testing opportunities are:

  • Tuesday 25 April, 7:00 to 9:00PM
Lowell High School, 50 Father Morrissette Boulevard, Lowell, MA
Park on the street or in the garage across the street from the Lowell High Field House (small fee required).
  • Saturday 6 May, 12:00 to 2:00PM
Danvers YMCA, 35 Pickering Street, Danvers, MA
Plenty of parking in the YMCA lot.

Scouts can arrive in their swimsuits or change in the locker room on-site. Please note that this is not a “free swim” opportunity — it is a 3- to 5-minute test administered by the Council’s Aquatics and Camp teams.

If your Scout will be attending either event, please RSVP directly to the Wah-Tut-Ca Camp Director, Zack Sheherd, at either +1 978 967 6463 or zshepherd@scoutspirit.org, so he can be sure to have enough staff on-hand to make the testing run smoothly.
