Fruit Cobbler Dump Cake

A traditional camping dessert recipe. Dump cakes get their name because you more or less just dump the ingredients in. A very high deliciousness to effort ratio.

Ingredients

  • Two 16-ounce cans of apple pie filling
  • One 18.25-ounce package of yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup of butter

Things You’ll Need

  • Dutch Oven
  • Can opener
  • Knife
  • Shovel (for clearing spot in hot coals and putting coals on top of Dutch oven)
  • Big serving spoon

Instructions

  1. Open the cans of pie filling and pour the contents into the Dutch oven. Spread evenly.
  2. Pour the dry cake mix into the Dutch oven on top of the pie filling. Spread evenly. DO NOT mix.
  3. Cut the butter into small pats. place on top of the cake mix, spread out evenly. Still do not mix.
  4. Put the lid on the Dutch oven and place on hot coals.
  5. Place some hot coals on the Dutch oven’s lid.
  6. The cake should take between 45 and 60 minutes to bake, depending on the heat of the coals. To play it safe, check at 30 minutes.
  7. When done, remove Dutch oven from the coals and serve cobbler with the spoon.
  8. Enjoy.

Variations

There are countless ways to make this a different dessert every time you make it.

  • Add flavoring. For example, add cinnamon if using apple pie filling.
  • Try different fruit flavors, like cherry pie filling, or even canned peaches in syrup.
  • Mix things up. Try one can of apple and one can of cherry. Other combos might work well, too.
